#03 Prompting Technique

Direct Prompts (Zero-Shot)

Ask directly without examples or context.

What It Is

Direct prompting (also called zero-shot prompting) means asking AI to complete a task without providing examples, elaborate context, or step-by-step instructions. You simply state what you want and let AI figure it out.

This is the simplest prompting technique and often the best starting point. If it works, you're done. If not, you can layer in examples or scenarios.

Why It Works

Pattern completion: AI's training includes millions of examples of common tasks. For well-established patterns — writing emails, summarizing text, basic explanations — AI already knows what to do.

Efficiency: Direct prompts use fewer tokens, leaving more context window space for AI's response. This works especially well when the task is straightforward and doesn't require nuanced understanding.

When To Use It

Use When
  • Task is common and well-defined
  • You want quick results to test viability
  • The request is self-explanatory
  • You're exploring what AI can do
  • Examples would be hard to provide
Skip When
  • Output is too generic
  • AI misunderstands your intent
  • Task requires a specific format or style
  • You need consistent results
  • Context would significantly improve output

Pro Tips

  • Start simple: Always try direct prompts first. Only add complexity if needed.
  • Be specific about what: Even without context, specify exactly what you want — 'Write a 100-word LinkedIn post' vs. 'Write something.'
  • Iterate quickly: If the output isn't right, add constraints: 'Make it shorter' or 'Use simpler language.'
  • Know when to upgrade: If you're giving the same corrections repeatedly, switch to examples or a more detailed prompt structure.
  • Test the boundary: Direct prompts help you discover what AI can do without hand-holding — a useful calibration step.
