TECHNIQUE #04

Chain of Thought Prompts

5 copy-paste prompts for better AI results

What It Is

Chain of Thought prompting asks AI to break down its reasoning into explicit steps before giving a final answer. Instead of jumping straight to a conclusion, you request intermediate reasoning that makes the AI's logic visible and correctable. This technique transforms AI from a "magic answer box" into a collaborative thinking partner that shows its work.

Why It Works

AI generates text by predicting what comes next based on patterns. When you ask for step-by-step reasoning, each intermediate step becomes part of the context that influences the next prediction. This creates a "reasoning chain" where each link improves the quality of what follows. Breaking down complex problems activates more relevant patterns from the AI's training, reducing hallucinations and improving accuracy. Video 12 in our series explains the mechanism in detail.

✓ When To Use

  • Complex problem solving
  • Business decisions with trade-offs
  • Debugging and troubleshooting
  • Project planning with dependencies
  • Learning new concepts systematically
  • When you need to verify AI's logic

✗ When To Skip

  • Simple factual questions
  • Creative writing (makes it stiff)
  • Quick answers needed
  • Already specific prompts
  • Brainstorming ideas
  • Short, straightforward tasks

5 Ready-to-Use Templates

Copy these directly into ChatGPT or Claude. Each follows the same pattern: request step-by-step reasoning, then guide the AI through the logical sequence.

Template 1: Analyzing Business Decisions

When to use: Evaluating investments, strategic choices, vendor selection
I need to evaluate [DECISION]. Walk me through this step by step: 1. List the key factors I should consider 2. For each factor, explain the pros and cons 3. Identify any risks or hidden costs 4. Recommend which option makes most sense and why 5. What questions should I ask before finalizing? Here's my situation: [CONTEXT]
Example:
"I need to evaluate switching to a new CRM. Walk me through this step by step..."
Why this works:
Forces AI to consider each angle separately instead of jumping to conclusions.

Template 2: Debugging Problems

When to use: Something's broken, process isn't working, customer complaints
I'm having this problem: [DESCRIBE PROBLEM] Help me debug it step by step: 1. What are the 3 most likely causes? 2. For each cause, how would I test if that's the issue? 3. Once I identify the cause, what's the fix? 4. How do I prevent this from happening again? Here's what I've already tried: [ACTIONS TAKEN]
Example:
"My email open rates dropped 40% this month..."
Why this works:
Systematic troubleshooting instead of guessing randomly.

Template 3: Planning Projects

When to use: New initiatives, complex tasks, anything with multiple moving parts
I need to plan [PROJECT]. Break this down step by step: 1. What are the major phases from start to finish? 2. For each phase, what are the key tasks? 3. What resources or tools will I need? 4. What dependencies exist (what has to happen before what)? 5. Create a realistic timeline with milestones Project details: [DESCRIPTION] Timeline: [AVAILABLE TIME] Resources: [TEAM/BUDGET/TOOLS]
Example:
"I need to plan a website redesign..."
Why this works:
Prevents missing critical steps and reveals hidden complexity early.

Template 4: Writing Complex Content

When to use: Proposals, reports, long-form content requiring structure
I need to write [TYPE OF CONTENT] about [TOPIC]. Build this step by step: 1. What are the main sections this should include? 2. For each section, what key points need to be covered? 3. Create an outline with section headers and bullet points 4. Now write section 1, focusing on [KEY OBJECTIVE] Audience: [WHO WILL READ THIS] Goal: [WHAT SHOULD HAPPEN AFTER THEY READ] Tone: [PROFESSIONAL/CASUAL/TECHNICAL]
Example:
"I need to write a project proposal for upgrading our security system..."
Why this works:
Builds structure first, then fills in content - prevents rambling.

Template 5: Understanding Complex Topics

When to use: Learning new concepts, researching unfamiliar areas, training
I need to understand [TOPIC]. Teach me step by step: 1. Start with the basics - what is this in simple terms? 2. What are the 3-4 core concepts I need to know? 3. For each concept, give me a real-world example 4. How does this apply to [MY SPECIFIC SITUATION]? 5. What should I learn next to deepen my understanding? My background: [YOUR EXPERIENCE LEVEL] Why I need this: [CONTEXT]
Example:
"I need to understand SEO for my business website..."
Why this works:
Progressive learning that builds from foundation to application.

Pro Tips

  • Iterate: First response not quite right? Say "Let's focus on step 2 - break that down further"
  • Combine with examples: Add "Show me an example at each step" for clearer guidance
  • Adjust depth: Too much detail? Say "Keep each step to 2-3 sentences." Too little? Ask it to expand.
  • Save your best prompts: When you nail a template for your business, save it for reuse
